In June 1974, Manuel Quesada, his brother Alvaro, and their father, Manuel Sr., opened a cigar factory called Manufactura de Tabacos S.A. (Matasa) in Santiago, Dominican Republic. The Quesada family had worked with tobacco since the late 1800s in Cuba, but this was its first venture into cigar making. At the time, Dominican cigars were virtually unknown in the cigar world, but Matasa grew from making thousands of cigars a year to millions, thanks to the popularity of house brands such as Fonseca and Cubita, as well as a host of brands made under contract for other companies importing cigars to the United States.

Arturo Fuente Anejo from 2009 - how lucky was I to find an Anejo from last year in the bottom of my humidor. Full of tangy spices and a savory meaty flavor, this cigar is worthy of an expedition to track them down when they appear each year. But, you will want to save each one for at least a year before setting them ablaze. The extra year allows the flavors to really come together and round out. The 'fresh' Anejo is a good cigar, but an Anejo with one or more years on it is even better.
Arturo Fuente Rosado Sungrown Magnum R - new sizes will most likely be on display at the upcoming IPCPR trade show in August. Carlos Fuente said the new sizes would likely be quite fat.
Fuente launched the line in December as a trio made with old Ecuadoran Sumatra wrappers, grown by the Olivas who are headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Fuente said the leaves were eight to 10 years old.
"We set those wrappers aside when we first created the [Arturo Fuente] Sun Grown line," he said. These wrappers are not only old, but are from much lower on the plant, the second and third primings, than the traditional primings that he has used in the past.
The three original sizes are Vitola Fifty-Two, which measures five inches by 52 ring gauge, Vitola Fifty-Four, 6 1/4 inches long by 54 ring, and Vitola Fifty-Six, 5 5/8 by 56.

Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions. Bob then opens a sealed envelope and discovers the cigar’s name and manufacturer. If you have suggestions for the "What's My Band?" segment, please send them to liz@cigarmedia.tv.
