DogWatch Cigar Radio #265: Screams Esteli
03-13-2010
Craig Schneider guest hosts with Bob and Dale this week.
Cigar of the Week - Murcielago.
The name, Murcielago, Spanish for “Bat,” came about when Ortega and Espinosa were on a visit to Mexico, and were taken to see caves, literally, filled with bats. The slightly box pressed cigars, wrapped in a Mexican leaf, have been produced in the following sizes:
Churchill 7-1/8 X 48
Toro 6-1/8 X 50
Belicoso 5-1/2 X 52
Robusto 5-1/8 X 50
Rothschild 5-1/8 X 50
These medium to full bodied cigars have a Nicaraguan filler; Mexican binder and Mexican Maduro wrapper. Packaged in traditional wood boxes of twenty cigars with paper edging, the logo of the brand is a stylized bat, reminiscent of Batman!
Dark Side for Bob and Dale - Ramon Allones Estupendos PCC Regional Edition.
Craig's Dark Side - Dunhill Estupendos - Mid 80's

What else have you been smokin' Dale?
LFD DL-600 - 5 1/4" x 52, this is the size I mentioned last week. Have smoked several more since then, and behind the Chisel vitola is Dale's 2nd favorite from this line. All Dominican filler & binder grown on LFD farms and wrapped with a very dark, oily Ecuadorian Sun Grown leaf. Powerful, full flavored cigars - perfectly constructed. A big dose of pepper at the start, and again in the last 3rd. Although quite strong, not harsh in any way. Sweet tobacco, roasted nuts and a touch of dark cocoa balance the bold flavors. Full bodied all the way, the finish lingers forever and makes you want to light another one....if you can stand up to get to the humidor.
La Riqueza #4 - 5" x 48, Nicaragua binder & filler, US Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. Full, rich flavors, medium body and a traditional box pressed look. Good pepper with emerging sweet spices (clove, nutmeg) as the cigar progresses. Also some nice dark coffee notes. Old leather is especially prevalent on the retrohale. Room aroma is sweetly pungent and earthy. Still a top contender for a spot on the "if I could only have one cigar the rest of my life" list. Avail in 5 sizes in beautiful dress boxes with old cuban artwork.
Arganese CL3 - 6" x52 Torpedo, all Dominican grown tobaccos, heavy on the Corojo variety, with a dark Corojo wrapper. Very robust in looks and flavors. Of course, a high % of ligero leaves gives it the name and the motto - "Corojo Ligero to the 3rd power". A creamy cigar with lots of coffee, sweet molasses and woodsy flavors. A touch of salty spiciness in the middle of the cigar was a pleasant surprise, and morphed into a smooth light pepper at the end. Med-full bodied, complex flavors a perfect draw & burn.
Esencia Robusto - my last one...sniff, sniff. Another top contender for the "only one cigar" list, I love all the sizes in this line. I think the lancero and petite corona showcase the blend best, but the robusto has it's own style and brings out the savory hickory wood smoke and wine tannin flavors best. Top quality construction and consistent taste from cigar to cigar. Definitely world class!
Also....Liga Privada T52 Toro, Guantanamera 310 Pyramide, Elogio Lancero

Gurhka Black Dragon - Robusto 4.25x52, Connecticut Maduro wrapper, Cameroon binder, Dominican filler. a very power house of sweet spice wrapped in the dark coffee of the maduro wrapper. A relaxing and intriquing smoke.
Elogio Serie LSV - Robusto Size: 5 x 50, spicey flavors in a well rounded cigar of outstanding quality.
