DogWatch Cigar Radio #225 - DogWatch Futures

The Cigar of the Week - Arturo Fuente Cuban Belicoso Sungrown – 5.75” x 52 ring gauge Figurado. We kick off the month with a classic cigar from Fuente that has been around a long time and doesn’t get fanfare in today’s world of marketing the newer/bigger/stronger offerings. Fuente uses their own prime aged Dominican tobaccos for the filler & binder, then wrap it all up in a gorgious, dark, Ecuadorian Sungrown leaf that imparts wonderful sweet & mildly spicy elements. Packaged in the traditional Fuente dress box of 24 cigars, each cigar also has a cedar sleeve and the black ribbon at the foot indicative of the Fuente Sungrown line. The Cuban Belicoso is markedly Fuente in character, yet has unique flavors that beg to be explored.

Colin Ganley joins us in some lively discussions about Pete Johnson's new Futures project and what's coming up in European Cigar Cult Journal.

On the Dark Side - Marca - Cohiba , Frontmark - Maduro 5 Genios, Vitola - Estupendos, Box code EMA Aug 07, 140 mm (5.5") x 52 ring gauge - The Cohiba Maduro 5 is the recent Maduro wrapped line extension from Cohiba, out on the market about 2 years now. These are made in the Partagas factory & the line currently includes 2 other smaller sizes, the Magicos and Secretos. This line is wrapped with a dark, oily tobacco that has been aged for 5 years, thus reaching the Maduro, or "ripe" stage. Although maduro wrappers are darker in color, they do not have to be the very dark color we in the US are becoming used to seeing. In fact, there are purportedly 64 gradients within the Cuban wrapper color spectrum, generally broken down into one of 8 broader categories - Candela (green), Claro, Colorado Claro, Colorado, Colorado Maduro, Double Claro, Maduro and Oscuro (black). In terms of the Cohiba Maduro 5 line, we need to think more about a fully fermented and "ripe" leaf instead of thinking so much about the color of the leaf as has lately been defined by other cigar manufacturers.
