Cigar of the Week - Torano Virtuoso Maestro
The Virtuoso is the first ever Sun-Grown wrapper cigar to be both made and grown by the Torano family. Torano describes this line as being the most full bodied cigar in their portfolio. With fillers from Nicaragua, Honduras and Panama, a binder from Honduras and that Pueblo Nuevo SunGrown wrapper from their own fields in Nicaragua, Torano says you will get a smooth and well balanced cigar full of peppery spice, roasted coffee and cocoa flavors. Since Bob has been on a Churchill kick lately, our last selection for November is the 7” by 50 Maestro vitola.  Three other sizes are also available, all come in beautiful white finished cedar boxes of 25 cigars.

What's new on the web site? 250th Show Contest -

Lots of great herf line calls for this special episode.

    What's my Band? Bob smokes Dale's #410
Soft construction, very fine wrapper with few if any veins, very nice sour straw flavor,  retro=hale has a burnt toast affect, fine grained solid white ash, finish has a slight tongue tingle, peppery in the back of the throat, slightly metallic. Turns out it is a Paul Garmirian Reserva Exclusiva.

On the Dark Side - Bob smokes a Ramon Allones  Specially Selected 4.9 x 50 from Feb, 2008 provided by USHorsemen.

Los Blancos NINE - The Nine is Los Blancos's answer to the Cain, and T110 and other full-bodied, triple ligero sticks.  David would not tell me the exact specs.  The cigar differs from other triple ligero sticks in its fermentation in the fermenting and the wrapper.  Los Blancos uses an Oscuro wrapper that is very dark, and very oily (think Liga Privada).  This is a very good looking smoke with great construction and a very nice heft to it.  I smoked the robusto.  No matter how you smoke this cigar it seems to smoke very slowly producing copious amounts of smoke and coating your pallette (palate) with a smoky, bitter flavor that is savory and rich.  This is a full bodied cigar but it does not overwhelm with nicotine.  Although many will recommend this cigar later in the day or after a hearty meal, I have found it to be an excellent wake up call with a good cup of Black Dog Coffee in the morning as well.  Unfortunatley, Los Blancos does not yet have this stick up on the web site.

Cain Maduro - Following on the heels of the NUB, Sam Lescia has produced another unigue cigar to stir up the business.  The Oliva Cain Cigars are a triple-fremented all-ligero cigar that was released in August of 2009. The inspiration for the blend is the motto of "straight ligero". These cigars have a variety of ligero tobaccos from several regions of popular tobacco farms in Esteli, Condega, and the Jalapa Valley in Nicaragua. According to Sam, the critical part of this cigar is the arrangement of the ligeros to achieve perfect burn and maximum flavor.  Sam says the wrapper plats only a small part in the flavor profile of this cigar.  An interesting approach to cigar making.  In the case of the Cain Maduro, the recipe works.  Smoking the cigar is a trip through coffee fields, with a soft focus camera.  The strength of the all ligero stick is moderated by the triple fermentation that takes away the bitter edginess usually found in ligero.  Sam and David a re setting great examples for others to produce these full bodied, slow burning flights of fantasy.  I was skeptical at first but now I am hooked on the Cain Maduro and the Blancos Nine.
    Double Toro (6x60)
    Robusto (5.5x50)
    Torpedo (6x54)
The Cain comes in maduro and habano wrappers.

There are very noticeable differences in these two cigars, the habano wrapped Cain is a more medium bodied (relatively speaking) cigar that its maduro brother and the Los Blancos Nine is more in line with the body of the Habano wrapped Cain.  But each marca has its own characteristics that make them unique.  The Cain Maduro sports a definite bold espresso flavor profile that is meaty, smooth and not the least offensive.  This is not a bold cigar like an LFD Triple Ligero but more of a loud cousin of the NUB.  you know the type, they come to Thanksgiving dinner and boast about their success and tell great stories about womanizing and travel.  Always in a loud blustery voice that although it can be annoying after 7 or 8 hours, it really lights up what may otherwise be a dull dinner.

The Nine is more like the well-to-do uncle that you only see once a year who shows up for dinner in a suit that looks brand new with a pretty blonde on his arm and presenting a fine bottle of wine that no-one ever heard of to the hostess.  His company is enjoyable and the lady is nice to look at.  He can blend in with rest of the working family but other than his fine clothes does not stand out as arrogant or snooty.  Turns out the wine is pretty darn good as well.
