CigarMedia Discussion > Jekyll and Hyde or maybe it should be Run Away!

I just adventured into one of the worst and one of the best cigars in recent experience. Both cigars were part of the Dogwatch Cigar Club for May, 2010.

The best? The Silverdale Toro Major which was the 6 X 52 size. I enjoyed this one while parked in the UStream chat room of last Friday nights’ DWCR show, good show guys. The Silverdale was an excellent cigar from start to finish and I was sad to have to put it down when there was less than ½ inch remaining. I was so happy with it I ordered more from my favorite retailer FullersPullers.com

The worst? Oh were to start? The 5 ½ X 50 Toro shape and the colorful band of the Cosmo Topper were interesting. I clipped it with my trusty Palio cutter, a pre-light sniff of the foot and body of the cigar foretold nothing of the disasters about to unfold. The light up proved out that cigar was plugged! I should have just stopped there, but I clipped the char away and ran my drawpoker through it, after all I paid money for this thing and I was determined to give it a go. I did get it to light up, finally, then the wrapper began to flake away and unravel at the head, not a good sign, but I kept going. The first third delivered very strong spice something close to Tabasco and a canoe burn I could not correct. I’m not a fan of extreme spice but to each their own. By the middle third I threw caution out the window and did a retrohale, which was a very big mistake. It was as if I had unhinged my sinus cavity and poured in an aerosol can of mace. My sinuses were on fire and I had a fit of boisterous sneezes & coughing that brought the family out to the patio to see if Papa was OK. So to sum up my experience with the Cosmo Topper, I will quote a line from my favorite Monty Python movie when the valiant knights are confronting the killer rabbit, “RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!”

Discretion is the greater part of valor. Sometimes you just have to punt etc etc etc. Good review Don, appreciate the style and the forthright nature of your writing. Perhaps you have saved one or more others from such a fate.

Great post! My retrohale adventures are only attempted with cigars I have confidence in, burn well, and are within the strength of what I can handle. If it's an "out of Bruce range," I'll sit back and enjoy the flavors and experience the smoke as much as I can.

A bad burning cigar is probably not a good candidate for retrohaling since one is forced to "suck" rather than simply take a breath to enjoy the smoke. Overheating the tobacco does bad things to the cigar and will do even worse things for our sinus cavity. It has taken me a few bad cigar burning experiences to learn that I need to change ways. :)

The Series G Maduro Robusto 5 pack I scored for $12.98 on CigarMonster tonight will be a good candidate for retrohaling -- perhaps three tiimes for my tender sinus cavities. :)
